Jojoba (pronunciation – ho-Ho-ba) is a wax ester with a mild smell that is extracted from the seed of the Simmondsia chinenis (jojoba tree). This oily substance is very like sebum that is produced by the human sebaceous glands. Jojoba oil is non-comedogenic and hence is useful in treating acne. It provides various benefits for the skin that can even help acne outbreaks.
Jojoba oil is an ingredient that is found in many beauty and skin products like anti-aging products, moisturizers, lip gloss, lip sticks, hair conditioners, hand creams, body oil and facial cleansers.
Benefits of Jojoba for Acne
- The main benefit of jojoba oil for acne is that it will not clog pores.
- It is an excellent moisturizer since it does not evaporate like water-based moisturizers but lasts all day long.
- Since it mimics human sebum, it is theorized that it can ‘trick’ the skin to believe that there is sufficient oil and thus regulate production of sebum.
- Jojoba oil does not lose its anti-oxidant properties or get spoilt soon
- It can be spread easily on the skin and gets absorbed quickly
- Organic jojoba oil is free from GMOs and pesticides.
Ways to use Jojoba Oil for acne
Moisturizer: Jojoba oil for acne can be applied directly on acne-prone areas and massaged very lightly. This acts as a moisturizer. A few drops can even be added to your regular moisturizer.
Cleanser: ‘Oil Cleansing Method’ is a way to remove oil from face using oil. The theory is that if you use jojoba oil or similar oils on the face, it breaks down the oils secreted by the skin and unclogs pores. This can relieve acne symptoms. Massage a few drops of jojoba oil on the face or other acne areas. Remove the oil by placing a hot towel over it. Let the towel cool off and then wipe off the oil. Wipe with the hot towel at least 2-3 times until the face is clear of all oil. Finally splash cold water on the face.
Spot Treatment: Jojoba oil helps acne eruptions since it has anti-inflammatory properties. Hence, it can be used for spot treatment of pimples. Mix a few drops of jojoba oil with tea tree oil and apply directly on the pimple. Keep this away from the eyes.

Precautions and Considerations while using Jojoba oil
Organic jojoba oil is very expensive. If more than 6 drops are added to any recipe it can make the skin shine unnaturally. Hence, use the oil conservatively.
Buy only pure jojoba oil available at health food stores. Too much use of jojoba oil can worsen your acne. Since it is an oily substance, excess can attract dirt and clog pores. Use only a few drops that the skin can easily absorb.
Although jojoba oil is safe, some people can develop contact dermatitis. Hence, before using jojoba oil, it is best to consult a dermatologist or at least a trained aromatherapist.
