Types of Acne Scars

Acne is one of the most common skin disorder affecting mostly in teenage. According to estimates in America alone approximately 50 million people suffer from acne. Acne outbreak requires three things to happen at the same time in our body –

  • Excessive secretion of sebum by sebaceous glands
  • Shedding of dead skin cells at abnormally high rate, this when combines with sebum blocks pores
  • Bacteria on the skin start growing and cause inflammation

In most cases acne leaves no scars and permanent marks behind but in some cases it does. These are four types of acne scars categorized based on their shapes. Actually there are only two main kinds of scars – raised and depressed which are later categorised in four. Raised scars nothing lumps of fleshy tissue while depressed scars are depression in the skin caused due to acne.

ice pick acne scarsIce pick acne scars : These are a common type of scars. They get their name as they look like the skin has been punctured by an ice pick. These are generally like deep pits but not very large across the skin.

Ice pick scars begin as whiteheads or blackheads. But soon with action of the three reasons mentioned above causes irritation and inflammation. the inflammation then moves deeper in the skin causing serious forms of acne such as cysts. As the acne scar tissue sinks into the skin, deep pits are formed which are known as ice pick scars.

Boxcar acne scars : Boxcar acne scars are also depressed acne scars. They are angular and resemble scars left by chicken pox. boxcar acne scarsMost common locations of such scars is cheeks and temples.  As with ice pick scars these are also caused when the pimple lesion damages the skin layer – dermis. More the damage bigger the boxcar scar.

rolling acne scarsRolling acne scars : These scars are also part of depressed acne scars. These scars gives the skin a wave like appearance. These are formed when fibrous bands of tissue develop between the skin and the subcutaneous tissue below. These bands then tend to pull the outermost layer of the skin binding it to skin structures which are deeper, thus giving a wavy appearance.

Hypertrophic and Keloid Scars : This is a type of a raised scar. Unlike other scars, they generally occur on the chest and back part of the body. These scars develop due to overproduction of collagen. Collagen is a protein which connects and supports other body tissues.  There is a difference between a Hypertrophic and Keloid scar, hypertrophic scars remain with the boundaries of the original wound while Keloids scar even out of the original wound boundary.Hypertrophic and Keloid Scars
