Spirulina is natural and immensely nutritious algae, which is in use since 16th century by North Africans. This algae is found in spiral shape and is a good source of nutrients and provide many natural benefits to human being.

Fever : Due to the high content of protein in this water plant, the most general spirulina side effect reported is minor increase in the body temperature. This is all because the body system burns the excess protein accumulated by consumption of spirulina. During this process of protein burning the body generates heat which leads to mild fever in some individuals.

Dizziness : If you are anemic, chances are you may feel some sort of dizziness or lethargy or even excessive hunger on consumption of this water plant.  If you are yet to be diagnosed for this condition and you witness these spirulina side effects, don’t hesitate to consult your doctor.

Feeling of Extreme Thirst and Constipation : Often a few people may feel thirsty and witness upset stomach like constipation. It may also stimulate further adverse effects like skin rashes, cold and coughing. Such signs are mostly seen in people with breathing troubles

Edema : This condition is associated with swelling of body tissue, which is often reported as a potential side effect of ingestion of spirulina. As spirulina is equipped with highly concentrated level of minerals, proteins and vitamins, anyone with weak kidney may find it difficult to filter all molecules. A potential sign of weak kidneys and its malfunctioning could be swelling of extremities. Digestive Trouble : Slight indigestion can be felt if you are consuming spirulina. Large quantity of spirulina may buildup gas into the intestines and trigger abdominal pain. In addition, insufficient quantity of fluid may lead to chronic constipation during consumption of spirulina. This water plant is capable enough to retain toxins and leftover component in the colon. You much take sufficient quantity of water to push spirulina through the digestive path.

Supports Autoimmunity : If you are suffering from autoimmune disorder like rheumatoid arthritis, sclerosis, lupus you should avoid consuming spirulina. This water plant supports immune system which in turn may deteriorate autoimmune condition.

Phenylkethonuria : This species is rich in the chemical phenylalanine, which may worsen the condition of phenylketonuria. Avoid these algae products if you are suffer of phenylketonuria.

How to Reduce Side Effects

To start with, it is highly recommended to start drinking an extra 1 litre of water each day. Start with small dose of this product and then increase the quantity that your body would be able to digest it. It will also enable you know if you are allergic to spirulina.
If you witness any kind of swelling, fever or rashes, just don’t hesitate to consult your doctor. Do have a good idea of having high quality of spirulina, as low quality or contaminated spirulina product may often lead to nausea, vomiting, weakness, stomach pain, shock, liver or kidney damage and rarely death too.

Scientists recommend an ideal dose of 50 grams spirulina each day, but it may range between 1-8 gms based on the quality of the product.


This water plant is mostly believed to be quite safe and also recommended during pregnancy. Most often than not, you will not witness any major spirulina side effect except some minor changes in digestive process. These mild spirulina side effects usually vanish within a few days.
